Purpleheart grows as medium-sized to large trees reaching 120–150 ft tall, with trunk diameters of up to 5 ft. Purple heart can be somewhat variable in color from light purple to deep purple. The color normally changes to some degree after it is cut, usually turning a darker purple with exposure. Some trees are more color stable than others. This color-shift can be slowed and minimized by using a UV inhibiting finish on the wood.
